J. Beth Perdue, Pastor

When was your business founded/established?
First UMC was established in 1845. We've had different buildings and different names, but the forerunner of this congregation began that year.
What makes your business unique in the Harrisburg area?
We are one of two United Methodist churches in the immediate Harrisburg area. Our sister church, Pleasant Valley UMC, is just outside of town on Locust Lane. We offer Christ to all, and strive to give our all to Christ.
What product/service do you offer?
We offer eternal life through Jesus Christ! But we also offer food through the Bread of Life food pantry, an ecumenical effort in our community, as well as financial assistance for utilities, prescriptions, and other needs, as resources allow. We also have activities and classes for children, youth, and adults.
What is it that you want Harrisburg area residents to know about your business?
We care! The founder of the Methodist movement, John Wesley, taught that we become "full Christians" through acts of piety (worship and study) and acts of mercy (giving to others). We care about people -- mind, body, and spirit.
What do you enjoy most about doing business with Harrisburg?
Harrisburg has a true sense of community. When someone is in need, everyone steps up and helps. We love being part of such a loving community.
What are your customers saying?
A while back, a young girl asked to be baptized. When asked why, her face lit up and she answered, "Because I love Jesus and the time is right!" That's what we're here for.
